“The Mirror” is my second story published in Hearth and Coffin, a fairly new and well-produced literary journal, this being their second issue. The theme this time was “Pride,” and I submitted this story of a man who, as he approaches old age, finally lets go of his reflexive egotism and surrenders the cheap satisfactions of a quietly abusive life.
This story is part of a suite that includes “Vengeance in Gray,” “The Wedding,” and “Nobody’s Favorite,” though in that last story the character and his backstory are a variant on the theme. (You can find links to those stories on my CV.)
